gio and Poki, thanks for the good discussion. I really don't mind it in this case as it provides a context of when it was taken (imo ) and that not the sun but the moon.

I had not previously considered star trail as a "no no"... I'm just curious under what circumstances would it be wrong/should be avoid?

I really like that photo although the star trails are a litle bit disturbing. But as it is only 8 rather strong ones the could easily be cloned out. I belive that star trails on an "ordinary" photograph like this (I write ordinary as it is not the star trails that is the main subject) is a bit out as the picture want to show a landscape as we use to look at it with our bare eyes. When we just look at a scenery we never see any trails.

I'm glad you're not upset by us, Mirrorless!

Usually, star trails should be avoided when you want to express peace, silence or a similar feeling, and star trails are welcome if they are either the main subject (which I, again, personally don't like - but there are millions of people who love them) or if you want to express a span of time rather than a point in time.

This is just how it usually works out - photography is art, not science, so try whatever you want - you'll find what you love when you've practiced enough.

As a sidenote: To avoid star trails, don't use a shutter speed that is longer than the rule of 500 suggests, e.g. 500 : (focal length x crop factor 1,5) --> for a 10mm lens this means your maximum shutter speed in night is about 33 seconds. As the rule of 500 ignores many factors (where you are in the world, what's the pixel density of your sensor and so on) it's not that exact at all, but it should provide a good starting point. If you get star trails even if you applied the rule of 500, just go some seconds below that (however, with a 24 MP sensor you should be okay; just keep it in mind once you've got a 36 MP APS-C sized sensor).
    Thanked by NickCyprus.
